Ambassador Theater (Baltimore, Maryland)
The Ambassador Theater is a historic Streamline Moderne movie theater on Liberty Heights Avenue in the Howard Park section of Baltimore, Maryland. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated Baltimore City Landmark. History The Ambassador was proposed in 1933 by F.H. Durkee Enterprises, who at the time operated the largest chain of movie theaters in Baltimore, at a site directly opposite the Gwynn Theater on Liberty Heights Avenue in the Howard Park neighborhood of Northwest Baltimore. After unsuccessful opposition from the owners of the Gwynn, the new theater was built in 1935. It was designed by John Jacob Zink, a prominent theater architect, and built by E. Eyring and Sons. It was at the time the most modern theater in Baltimore, superseded in 1939 by another Zink cinema, the Senator Theatre. The Ambassador Theatre is a Broadway theater at 219 West 49th Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S. Opened in 1921, the Ambassador Theatre was designed by Herbert J. Krapp and was constructed for the Shubert brothers. It has 1,125 seats across two levels and is operated by The Shubert Organization. The auditorium interior is a New York City designated landmark. The theater is oriented on a diagonal axis, maximizing seating capacity on its small site of . The facade is largely made of golden brick and is simple in design. The Ambassador Theatre, formerly Rotund Room, Rotunda, and Ambassador Cinema, was the longest-running cinema in Dublin, Ireland, and was operational on and off until 1999. It operated as a music venue between 2001 and 2008. it is used as an exhibition hall and event centre. History The building was designed by John Ensor and constructed as part of the Rotunda Hospital in 1764 as an assembly hall and social rooms on what is now called Parnell Street. The entertainment complex was intended to raise funding for the hospital. The building is listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.
